American relays horrifying story of her husband trying to escape Afghanistan: ‘There are dead bodies everywhere’. After a briefing by Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin and Gen. Mark Milley, MSNBC spoke to Zorah Aziz, who is working to get her husband out of Afghanistan. She described the organized way that Germans currently in Afghanistan have managed to have a meeting place for areas of the country where they can then transport their people safely to leave the country. But for Americans or Afghans authorized to leave with Americans, that isn’t available. According to Secretary Austin, the soldiers on the ground can’t leave the airport or it could destabilize the fact that America holds the airport. It has been reported that the Taliban has checkpoints set up that is making it difficult for anyone affiliated with the United States to make it to the airport. I was in Kabul when chaos broke out – here is what I saw and how I got out. Editor’s note: Afghan scholar Hanif Sufizada, who works at the Center for Afghanistan Studies at the University of Nebraska Omaha, got caught in Kabul during the chaos of the U.S. military pullout, when thousands of Afghans fled to the airport, seeking a way out of the country. Editor Catesby Holmes sent Sufizada an email on Aug. 17, 2021, telling him that she hoped he was OK – and his email back let us know that he wasn’t.Sufizada’s dispatches from Aug. 17 and 18 advance an important story: He brings an on-the-ground account of his struggle to leave Afghanistan and the impossible and irrational obstacles he had to overcome in order to flee – all of which he faced even though he is a U.S. resident with a green card and a family in Omaha. Sufizada, an economics scholar and former Afghan government official whose most recent story for The Conversation was “The Taliban are megarich –… https://ift.tt/3geSj6V

Facebook no, Twitter yes: which tech firms let the Taliban post? Analysis: Twitter has faced criticism for allowing members to post, while Facebook has taken harder lineAfghanistan live news: latest updatesAs Kabul fell to Taliban forces over the weekend, social networks struggled to cope with the renewed attention brought to the organisation – and its presence on their platforms. In the US, Republicans expressed outrage that Twitter, which had permanently banned Donald Trump from its platform in January, seemed content to allow named Taliban members access to the social network to promote their narrative. WhatsApp faced criticism for its role in enabling the Taliban to threaten, cajole and bribe local leaders into laying down their arms as they marched across the country. At Google, YouTube’s seeming lack of any substantial policy allowed it to avoid much of the attention, until it became the last network not to have rebuked the organisation.
